Room Manager

The room manager is an independent control system responsible for managing heating lighting and other electrical appliances in a room.

Parts and elementsrsm-parts.jpg

1. Four Infrared Touch Key.

2. One inch 130 x 130 pixels 4096 colours LCD screen.

3. Ultrasonic Presence Detector.

4. Ambient Lighting Sensor.

- Built in temperature sensor.

- Built in multi-tone buzzer for melody player.

Occupancy detector

The room manager detects occupant's presence in the room using ultrasonic motion sensor.

These sensor fills in the room with ultrasonic wave and analyse the reflected waves much like the echography to detect baby inside mother's womb. The sensors have wide coverage, and reflected waves fills every corner in the room, so that the position of the sensor within the room is not very important. The only requirement is that they must be facing the space in the room and not blocked by any object. Do not cover as they won't be able to detect your presence.

There are two types of occupancy detection:

  • Motion Detector : Detects occupant's motion, like walking, turning head, etc.
  • Presence Detector : Detects occupant's breathing motion.

Automatic Sleep Mode

Installed near a bed, the room manager can detect the breathing motion of someone sleeping and can activate the sleep mode automatically. It is effectively impossible to tell if someone is actually sleeping or just laying motionless on the bed,  however, the combination of motion detection and breathing detection allows the room manager to guess if the occupant has fallen asleep.

First the room manager will propose to switch to sleep mode, with a display on screen. In the absent of any response, the room manager will starts turning off the lamps, and if the occupant still didn't respond, then it will move definitely to sleep mode until the morning time.

Someone reading on bed would not activate the automatic sleep mode because there's always little movements that will be detected. Only when all occupant has fallen into deep sleep that the room manager will go to sleep mode automatically.

Operating modes

According to occupant presence and a set of timeouts, the room-manager sets the operating modes in 6 possible values:

  • In-room mode: This mode is activated when an occupant is detected for the first time in the room.
  • Sleep mode: Activated when a sleep condition is detected, or by user command.
  • At-home mode: Activated when the occupant has just left the room. This mode is used to maintain the temperature close to comfortable level. The room manager maintains this mode for as long as one other room manager has detected occupant. When all room-managers do not detected any presence, then
  • Night mode: Activated only in night time, when occupant has been detected previously, or is being detected in other room. Similar to At-home mode, this mode is used to keep temperature and night-lights while the house is considered occupied for the night. Night time period is configurable.
  • Away mode: This mode is activated when occupancy is not detected in any room for a certain period of time.
  • Vacation mode: When presence is not detected for a longer period, for example 24 hours, then the room manager puts the house in Vacation mode, which can be used for energy saving settings.

User can activate manually any mode within a few touches using the Change-mode menu, accessible from the main menu.

Contextual Setting

On each mode it is possible to configure individually each device and application programs.

Each program or device has it's own contextual setting, for example, with AutoHeating you can set different the room temperature setting for each mode.

Networking and Communications

The room manager communicates to other room manager or to smaller modules such as LiSwitch and PoSwitch using powerline communication. This system uses the existing power line installation as network to pass commands and messages. The communication protocol is conformant to EN 50065, which means that it can co-exist with other system compatible to this standard.

Each device is given a network address consisting of three numbers:

home_c.pngHouse number.

door.pngRoom number

node.pngDevice number

For example, home_c.png001, door.png002, node.png003 means a device belonging to house number 1, room number 2, and the device number 3. You can easily change the device network address from the Device Setup menu on the room manager. (See user manual).

A room manager can control small modules such as LiSwitch and PoSwitch having the same house number and room number. It can also communicate to other room manager in another room, having the same house number. It can not communicate to another device outside the house, having different house number.

Installation

daisy-320.jpgDaisy (RSM101) :

Install Daisy on a stable surface facing the maximum volume of the room.

Do not cover, as it won't be able to detect occupant entering the room.

In a bedroom, Daisy must be installed near the bed, so that it may detect the breathing motion of an occupant sleeping.

Plug the power cord into an electric outlet.

wally_install.jpgWally (RSM102):

Find a suitable wall facing the maximum volume of the room. If installed in a bedroom, Wally must be installed near the bed (head) so that it may detect the breathing motion of an occupant sleeping.

Fix the base with the screws provided before installing Wally on the hook. Plug the power cord into an electric outlet.
